Vera Wang grew up in Manhattan, New York City. She was a competitive skater and tried out for the US Olympic team but didn't make it so she quit at the age of twenty. In college she first studied theater but she realized that the odds of becoming an actress were low. She then switched to an art history major. Her father rejected the idea of art school and her parents said it was impractical. In 1972 she was hired at Vogue as senior fashion editor. With no training she was the youngest in vogue history to work at such a high position. She worked there for 17 years, but quit the job to work at Ralph Lauren as a designer for accessories. Vera fell in love with seeing people wear things that she helped create.Unfortunatly she had to quit her job at ralph lauren because she wanted to focus on her family and conceiving a child.
